Reykjavik, Iceland’s capital as well as the world´s most northerly capital, is a city full of activities, culture and fun! Despite its small size it has a lot to offer and counts as a metropole for the locals! Do you want to stroll around the city center and go to coffees seeing #glaciers in the background, go shopping to international clothing brand stores, explore Iceland’s art and culture, discover its nature and wildlife or party at different clubs and bars ? Then you will love Reykjavik! If you want to find out more about this unique city than read our guide below!

Hallgrímskirkja

The Hallgrímskirkja church is the highest church on the island and has a great importance for the city! Its architecture is a reflect of Iceland’s #nature, especially the waterfall Svartifoss. On top of the church there is a viewing point, from which you can have amazing views over the whole city! It is open every day!

City center

From the church you can go directly to Reykjavik’s city center! The center is split in two halves by the lake Tjörnin! The city is full of parks and colorful houses as well as street art and creative districts! A famous district is the Thingholtin, also known as the district of gods! Definitely worth a visit! If you enjoy shopping and want to discover some of Iceland’s brands than you should go to Laugavegur! Here, you will also find different museums like Landnámssýningin and the Saga Museum, that will give you an interesting view into Icelands culture and history. If you enjoy going on a night out with your friends this street as well as the streets Bankastræti and Austurstræti are the perfect place to go to! Here you will find one bar next to another and many #clubs that offer an atmosphere for everyone... there is a reason why Reykjavik attracts people from all over the world due to its great party opportunities!

The Old Harbour and Concert Hall Harpa

The old harbor is right next to the city center and gives you an insight into Icelander’s culture and life! The old wooden buildings and the fishing village are very traditional in Reykjavik! Here, you can also find the flea market ,Kolaportid, that offers everything from handmade sweaters to regional #sea fruit! It is open on Saturdays and Sundays between 11 am until 5:00 pm.

The Concert Hall Harpa is also located at the harbor and is very modern compared to the rest! Its glass facete, that is inspired by fish scales lets the building stand out in the city! In this Concert Hall plenty of different events take place all over the year. It is not only worth a view from outside but also from inside! However, if you don’t want to spend a lot of money on a concert you can also go to the café or the music shop inside of the Concert Hall Harpa!

Whale watching and Northern Lights

Do you want to see different kinds of whales in their natural habitat? Then, Iceland is the perfect place! Departing from Ægisgarður, in the harbor of Reykjavik, sailing to Faxaflói bay ,north of Reykjavík, you will encounter minke whales, orcas, humpbacks and dolphins, as well as blue, fin and sei whales who are not so often seen! From May to August, you will also be able to go on puffin spotting tours to Lundey and Akurey, where #puffins breed in the summer months!

The Northern Lights are probably Iceland’s most famous attraction! They are best seen between October and March! You can take a guided boat tour from Reykjavik’s harbor, that takes you away from the city lights! But remember to choose a day without wind and clouds to be able to see the lights clearly! The Elding Tours and Special Tours are the two main providers for the guided tours!
