The Maasai Mara is part of the larger Mara-Serengeti region in southwestern Kenya. It is considered one of the most famous wildlife reserves in the world. The reserve is home to an incredible variety of wildlife, including the Big Five: lions, elephants, leopards, buffalo and rhinos. It is also home to many other animals such as wildebeest, zebra, gazelles and various bird species. The reserve is most famous for the annual wildebeest migration. Although the wildlife and landscape are similar, Maasai Mara is much smaller than Serengeti National Park. Decide for yourself which one you want to visit, depending on your travel time!

Good to Know:

  • Getting There: Start your trip in Nairobi, where you'll embark on your guided safari.
  • Where to Stay: You will stay at one of the many lodges in the reserve. However, this may of course depend on your chosen safari.
  • When to Visit: It's worth visiting all year round, except during the rainy season in April and May. The Great Migration passes through the Maasai Mara in September and October, so these are also the most popular months to visit.
  • How Long to Visit: It depends on the safari, but generally you should allow about five days to see as much as possible!
  • More: Also check out our Serengeti National Park trip if you want to experience the Great Migration in August or September.

Highlights:

The Great Migration:

The Great Wildebeest Migration is an annual event in which millions of wildebeest, zebra, and gazelles migrate from the Serengeti in Tanzania to the Maasai Mara in Kenya in search of fresh grass and water. It is considered one of the most impressive natural events in the world and attracts many tourists to the region.

Hot Air Balloon Safari:

A hot air balloon safari in the Maasai Mara is a popular way to experience the beauty of the region and see wildlife, including the Great Wildebeest Migration, from a unique perspective. The safari usually begins early in the morning with a flight over the savannah at sunrise, offering breathtaking views of the landscape and the wildlife below.
